Indoor Activities

Kimmirut has a number of historical structures to be explored. It’s an easy hike between the first RCMP post (circa 1915), the Hudson’s Bay buildings (circa 1911), the Anglican Church (circa 1909) and the house (now the Soper House Gallery) built by government biologist and artist Dewey Soper.

The Soper House Gallery, run by the Quliruakut Arts & Crafts Society, displays various local works from jewellery to carvings and fabric arts to cards. See the Gallery link under Arts & Crafts for more information.

Another stop for those looking for indoor activities should be the Katannilik Park Visitors’ Centre, located immediately beside the Soper House, which displays artifacts, mineral samples, and objects of cultural interest as well as photographs and audiovisual information. There are also T-shirts, posters, videos and other souvenirs available for purchase.

Arrangements can also be made through the visitors’ centre or the community’s Economic Development Officer – at 867-939-2247 – for demonstrations of traditional indoor activities – a sewing demonstration and opportunity to try on sealskin or caribou clothing, drum-dancing, throat-singing, bannock-making, string games, or the chance to watch a local carver, jeweller or visual artist at work.
