Outdoor ActivitiesOpportunities for day trips abound in the area around Kimmirut. Hikes around the community offer views of waterfalls and other natural features as well as spectacular bird watching opportunities. In winter these same areas are easily accessible by snowmobile. Kimmirut offers opportunities for sea-kayakers and both white-water and river kayakers. While ocean-going wildlife watching tours can also be arranged from the hamlet, canoeists and white-water and river-kayakers head for the Soper River. See the link to Katannilik Territorial Park for more information and visit its Web site at www.nunavutparks.com. With both the ocean and a number of rivers in close proximity, tours can be arranged to fish for both Arctic char and cod, depending on the season, and with the appropriate permit. The local Hunters and Trappers Association (HTO) can help organize both fishing excursions and hunting trips for those interested in caribou or polar bear hunts. While the HTO issues polar bear permits, the community wildlife officer issues export permits. Visitors can also go clam digging and mussel collecting. Rock hounds will appreciate the presence of gemstones including garnet, sapphire, tourmaline, lapis lazuli and spinel, found in the area around Kimmirut. A Geology Walking Tour of the Kimmirut Area map prepared by the Canada-Nunavut Geosciences Office in Iqaluit is available from the economic development officer.
