Jewellery

Jewellery-makers in Kimmirut have been given more to work with as enthusiastic prospectors recently discovered a number of precious and semi-precious gemstones lurking in the rocks around the community.

Although Arctic in latitude, the geological structure of Kimmirut is similar to that of Afghanistan, Myanmar and Vietnam. Sapphires, spinel, tourmaline, garnets, and chrome diopside have already been found here and a number of artists such as Mary (Mialia) Akavak, Terry Itulu and Seemeega Akqpik have produced some fine and unique work from local gemstones. Lapis lazuli is also found in Katannalik Park, one of only four places in the world.

A lapidary workshop held in 2002 introduced local participants to the techniques of making shaped gemstones for jewellery and showed them the variety of tools used in this work. From earrings to bracelets to necklaces to rings, the themes invoked in Inuit-made jewellery make it stand out from other styles.

With exploration ongoing, the incorporation of local minerals into jewellery affords many opportunities for the future economic development of this area.
